Description
Beach of Spartaia
It is a splendid, fine, white sands beach in a narrow cove next to Procchio beach.
It is 150 metres long and 20 metres wide, and is well sheltered and exposed only to the north winds. The crystal clear water goes from turquoise to emerald green, and since it is shallow till quite far out, it is perfect for families with small children. The smooth, flat rocks on the left hand side are perfect for sunbathing and relaxing.
Half of the beach is taken up by the bathing establishments of the hotels behind, so the free area is very small.
Its name comes from the Latin word Sparto (Lygeum spartum), a wild plant that grows at the beach edge, and whose fibres are used for making ropes and mats.
The car park is along the road.
You can see the sign for Spartaia clearly on the road for Marciana Marina, about 300 metres after you leave Procchio. Follow the road down, and after about 200 metres, there is a short path for pedestrians only, that takes you right to the beach.
