Description
Beach of Remaiolo
This is the only beach in the Costa dei Gabbiani – the large peninsula on the south eastern side of the Island of Elba where the herring gulls make their nests – with a bathing establishment.
Please note that most of the area around Monte Calamita is part of the Holiday Resort, so cars are not allowed.
The beauty of the entire area is unique: the water is an intense, deep blue colour that goes from light to dark, the low Mediterranean bush is green, and the rocks all around have rusty red tints. On the beaches near the old mines along the right hand side of the coast you can still see traces of the past mining extraction.
It is a white sands beach, only 100 metres long and very sheltered. On the right a long row of rocks slopes down right into the sea and separates the beach from Vetrangoli, the one next to it, that consists of white pebbles and sand mixed with iron dust.
It faces Remaiolo rock, much loved by scuba divers for the great quantities of gorgonias, different species of fish, and lobsters.
The only way to get to the beach is by sea, either from one of the nearby beaches in Golfo Stella, or from Porto Azzurro.
There is also a grit road that starts off at Capoliveri, about 10 km long, that takes you to the Costa dei Gabbiani Holiday Village. From here, there is a very scenic road about 3 km long that takes you right to the beach, but access is allowed only to guests of the Village. For this reason, the entire road is more suitable for those on a mountain bike.
