Description
Beach of Fonza
Another beach where nature is still untouched in the Gulf of Marina di Campo. Fonza, on the opposite side of Galenzana, apart from the odd villa, is in a completely natural setting; the reason is that in order to get to it you have to go along a dirt track with an uneven surface for about 2,5 kilometers.
It must be said that, if you look down once you’re at the top of Monte Fonza, the view makes it all worthwhile: a cove with lush, Mediterranean bush all around, a crystal clear sea that goes from turquoise to dark blue, and a beach that a huge rock in the middle divides into two, almost like a sentinel watching over the horizon, this is Fonza.
The long beach consists of smooth, medium sized pebbles, while the sea bed consists of sand. There are no facilities.
From here you have a good view of the promontory of Capo Pero, and on clear days if you look beyond the Gulf of Marina di Campo you can even see the Island of Montecristo. Lush, Mediterranean bush at your back. There are numerous, tiny beaches along the coast on the left hand side, but the only way to get to them is by sea, and there are also many immersion areas along the way, like Scoglio della Triglia, Secca di Fonza and Le Coralline.
This beach, in the heart of nature, is perfect for lovers of peace and quiet, and if you have a dog, it is one of the few beaches where you are allowed to bring it with you.
Take the road from Marina di Campo for Lacona, then turn off when you see the signs for the Elba Aquarium and keep going along the dirt track with an uneven surface for about two kilometers. You can park your car by the side of the road just before you get to the beach.
