Description
Beach la Biodola – Portoferraio
Biodola is one of the most famous beaches on the Island of Elba; it is in the bay bearing the same name and is a perfect combination of sea, beach and nature. It is 560 metres long, and consists of fine, golden, quartz and mica sand. The crystal clear water, that goes from cobalt blue to emerald green, is shallow till quite far out, and if you stand in the water you will see the tiny fish swim around your feet. Lush, Mediterranean bush covers the surrounding hills.
The beach is perfect for families with small children, because it is easy to get to and has several bathing establishments, but it is also very popular among teenagers.
Because of the beauty of the beach, and the fact that every possible facility can be found there, it is very busy during the summer; unfortunately the numerous hotels behind the beach take up a lot of space, so finding a parking space here isn’t very easy.
The beach, right next to Scaglieri, takes its name from a cane that used to grow on the dunes there. A small rock stack separates the two beaches, but you can walk across a cement walkway in the rocks to get there.
This part of Elba is very similar to any area in a tropical country. The coastline of Marciana Marina, with Monte Capanne at the back, the Enfola peninsula, the Island of Capraia, and much more, can all be seen clearly on the horizon, so watching the sun set from this beach is a unique and unforgettable experience.
On the far left you have what could be called a “health trip”: the coastal road, surrounded by underground passages and Mediterranean bush, leads to a small, sheltered inlet with two very small, natural beaches, Lamaia and Porticciolo, both very popular among pleasure sailors who moor their boats there.
You can drive to the beach or take a bus: Take the right turning on the Portoferraio- Procchio road, and go down for about 1,8 km. The public bus service also takes you there.
