Description
Beach Fornacelle
The beach also known as Cala del Telegrafo, in an unpolluted bay that is only 2 kilometres from Cavo, also has a rich ilex grove at its back that goes down as far as the water’s edge. The tiny island of Cerboli is facing the beach – Elba’s nearest beach to Piombino – and its name reminds us of the iron mines no longer in use in the surrounding area.
The beach, consisting of ferriferous pebbles and sand, is 150 metres long, and thanks to the frequent breezes, the water is always crystal clear; since the sea here is very shallow till quite far out it is perfect for families with small children.
Due to the bright, iron dust mixed with the sand, the beach almost seems to glitter and has a shimmering effect above all when your skin is wet.
The only facility on the beach is an excellent bar/restaurant.
After about 2 kilometers on the road from Cavo to Rio Marina, turn off at the sign saying “Fornacelle”. The winding and at times narrow road – about 230 metres long – runs through an ilex grove and takes you right to the beach.
